Is the Old Testament View on Justice & Punishment Compatible with Christianity?

Is the Old Testament law a cruel master over Israel from which Jesus freed Christians? The legal reasoning of the Torah is some of the most misunderstood literature of the entire Bible. Jesus understood these books well and demonstrated keen legal insight whenever he interacted with the legal scholars and critics of his day.
