SUMMARY:Scientists\, Atheism & Religion: Deflating a Narrative of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:The “conflict thesis” between faith and science is one of the most stubborn myths that contributes to declining levels of public trust in scientists. Many outsiders\, especially religious people\, assume that all scientists are anti-religious\, based on the rhetoric of a few highly publicized scientists. In fact\, even among those identified as atheist scientists\, a diversity of views and opinions on religion exist. It is this diversity\, argues sociologist Elaine Howard Ecklund\, that holds the key to building bridges of understanding and pathways of dialogue across real and perceived divides.   \nWhether you identify as religious or not\, Ecklund’s research on the Varieties of Atheism in Science (Oxford University Press 2021) provides helpful data and context to understanding a less well-known dimension to the intersection of faith and science. In this lecture\, she will present core findings from a survey of over 1\,200 atheist scientists in the US and the UK and 81 in-depth interviews. Together\, you will explore what everyday atheist scientists think about religion and the limits to what science can explain\, atheist scientists’ views on meaning and morality\, and the routes that led to atheism in science.

SUMMARY:Thinking Theologically About These Times: A Workshop for Pastors & Preachers
DESCRIPTION:What a time to be alive—and what a challenging time it is for leaders to shepherd people toward transformation. Many church leaders have had to learn how to operate a hybrid church model with some members in-person and others only participating online. The current experience of the church is far different than it was only two years ago.   \nIn such a time as this\, pastors\, preachers\, and leaders are looking for theological insight and answers: How can they effectively preach to their congregations and lead them courageously? What is it they “ought” to do?    \nDuring this workshop\, Rev. Dr. William Curtis will help pastors and preachers articulate the burdens and blessings of these revolutionary days. He will help attendees bring theology to the forefront\, posing the question\, “What is God doing now\, in the midst of all that’s going on?” Thinking theologically both grounds and inspires believers as they pursue God in every area of life. Dr. Curtis will provide theological grounding and methods for pastors\, preachers\, and leaders to be better able to navigate and even thrive during these tumultuous times.   \nThis half-day workshop is co-hosted with Mt. Zion Baptist Church\, with additional partnership from Collaboration Project.

Wright’s book Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense as a springboard\, we will meet for six weeks over lunch for a guided conversation about the credibility and relevance of belief today.  \nWhom the Cohort is For \nAssuming no background knowledge\, this group is for anyone curious about what Christianity teaches and what it might have to say to them. DESCRIPTION:Do you find yourself questioning what you were created to do? Does God have one right job for you after college? Do you feel like college has fully prepared you for the challenges of the workforce? Do you have a certain sense of calling? \nOn average\, we spend 90\,000 hours of our lives at work. We want these hours to be meaningful\, and our gifts and education productively employed. Our desire is to be aligned with God’s good purposes for us. But…Is it really possible for these work-related wants to be fulfilled? Can we really make strong connections between meaning\, work\, and faith in today’s world? \nDuring this Upper House cohort series\, you will learn more about how to— \n\ndiscern God’s calling in a constantly changing world\nengage what the Bible actually says about work\ndevelop healthy habits and a realistic mindset for the world of work\nreflect productively on their work journey\n\nWe are created to be God’s image-bearers\, to pursue and live out God’s Kingdom purposes in all that we do. These sessions are set up to help you advance in your life and work journey\, knowing more about your purpose and assured that as a child of God you are always beloved\, growing\, and accompanied in all that you do. \nWho is this Cohort for?  \nThis cohort is for students who want to dig deeper into what God has for them\, their work\, and their faith. Each week we will learn about what the Bible has to say about work through the lens of the Gospel\, discuss practical skillsets to help us discern calling\, and engage in small group discussions. During our final week\, we will match each student with local vocational mentors (either one-on-one or in small groups) to have a galvanizing discussion about how to integrate Christian faith in the workplace.

SUMMARY:Let the Art Speak
DESCRIPTION:Bearing God’s image\, yet cloaked in humanity\, we labor to see the dignity of others and even ourselves. In a world awash in brokenness and turmoil\, art can powerfully speak. But how does this happen? \nMost works of art represent the convergence of artistic perception and skill\, as artists engage a variety of media and subjects. Meaning-makers by nature\, artists who focus on the human form and experience reveal the personhood of others and become storytellers in the process. When photographers capture the image of a face\, or painters study their subjects\, or filmmakers weave a narrative\, they draw near to an Other. In doing so\, they seek and even reveal meaning\, unveiling attributes\, emotions\, and human stories often undetected. \nTo launch this rich half-day conversation\, art historian Wayne Roosa will provide a critical framework to aid attendees in thinking more carefully about the human story and the place of our own stories within it. Following that\, photographer Asher Imtiaz\, filmmaker Alex Miranda Cruz\, and painter Catherine Prescott will share images of their compelling work and discuss the ideas\, convictions\, and questions that drive their creative endeavors. \nAmong the questions we will ask: How do these artists approach the holy task of presenting the personhood of their subjects? What stories are they telling? How can these makers—and others like them—help us to see more clearly? All together\, we will consider the ways in which art can be spiritually\, communally\, and culturally transformative. DESCRIPTION:How do you lead well through seemingly sequential crises—when the stakes are high\, the demands urgent\, and the issues and solutions complex and multilayered? \nBringing 35 years of crisis-honed experience to Upper House\, Steve Preston\, currently president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International\, is intimately familiar with such pressures. He served as the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in the wake of Hurricane Katrina\, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during the 2008 U.S. housing crisis\, and Chief Financial Officer of a Fortune 500 company during the Arthur Andersen accounting debacle. Through these and other crises\, Steve has had to negotiate strategies to achieve goals within an operational landscape experiencing intense pressure.   \nBoth Steve’s strategic acumen and long-held Christian faith inform his leadership. At this breakfast presentation\, he will reflect on how he has worked to help organizations navigate stress to advance their mission. Having served thousands of people and businesses in need of critical services\, his experience is invaluable for those considering what it means to be a leader during “such a time as this.”     \nThis event is in-person only (no livestream). DESCRIPTION:Are you struggling with doubt in your Christian faith? Are you afraid to voice your questions? Are you looking for practical tools to support someone on their journey through doubt? \nPastor\, professor\, and award-winning author A. J. Swoboda has witnessed many people wrestle with their core Christian beliefs and doubt. Too often he has seen people enter a period of legitimate questioning only to end up abandoning their faith altogether\, especially if the church fails to take up its role as a companion in questioning. \nDoubt and questioning present us an opportunity to deconstruct and reconstruct ideas and beliefs—to deepen in understanding about who we are and what we believe about God. The church and Christian companions have positive roles to play in this deconstruction and reconstruction process.
