SUMMARY:Pressing Issues for the Global Church
DESCRIPTION:The Christian church is a multinational\, multicultural\, multilingual body that spans every society on the globe. In the twenty-first century\, the vast majority of Christians live in the “Global South”—Asia\, Africa\, and Latin America. Yet in many conversations about “the Church\,” Americans tend to focus on themselves. In this summer series\, Upper House will host five talks to explore some of the dominant social issues in the global church—issues that affect all Christians\, albeit in different ways depending on location.

SUMMARY:The Rise & Fall of Dispensationalism: Book Launch with Dan Hummel
DESCRIPTION:As a theological perspective\, dispensationalism has had a profound impact on American evangelicalism—from advancing views on biblical literalism and end-times prophecies\, to the formation and defense of the current state of Israel. Even beyond its religious impacts\, dispensationalism has influenced culture and politics. Join Upper House as we unpack its origins and consider its broad cultural reverberations at our gathering with historian Dan Hummel\, whose new book— The Rise and Fall of Dispensationalism: How the Evangelical Battle over the End Times Shaped a Nation (Eerdmans\, 2023)—lands in bookstores this May.

SUMMARY:Public Dialogue in an Era of Polarization
DESCRIPTION:In an era of polarization and upheaval\, knowing when to “speak” (organize\, protest\, argue\, and actually talk) and when to “listen” (observe\, rethink\, seek out new information\, and take note) can be unclear\, even as our choices to engage can be quite consequential. Upper House welcomes Katherine Cramer\, Professor of Political Science at UW-Madison\, and John Fea\, Professor of History at Messiah College\, to discuss this topic.

SUMMARY:READ WISCONSIN — Enslaved\, Indentured\, Free: Five Black Women on the Upper Mississippi\, 1800-1850\, by Mary Elise Antoine
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Wisconsin Historical Society\, Upper House is excited to feature Mary Elise Antoine’s 2022 book\, Enslaved\, Indentured\, Free: Five Black Women on the Upper Mississippi\, 1800-1850 (Wisconsin Historical Society Press) in this first Read Wisconsin book event of 2023. The author will be attending the first part of our gathering (virtually) to discuss the book and her extensive research. \nAntoine’s book tells the story of five extraordinary Black women whose lives intersected in Prairie du Chien\, Wisconsin in the 1800s. Gleaning details from legal documents\, military records\, court transcripts\, and personal correspondence\, Antoine unveils the lived experience of enslaved Black people in the Upper Mississippi River Valley—people who were denied freedom despite the fact that the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 made slavery illegal in territory that encompassed Illinois\, Indiana\, Michigan\, Ohio\, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota. Difficult to enforce and riddled with loopholes\, the ordinance was thwarted by white enslavers who continued to hold Black people captive well into the 19th Century. The five women Antoine spotlights all secured their freedom through perseverance\, self-purchase\, or freedom suits.

SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Plagues & Political Conflict: The Era of the Early Christian Church
DESCRIPTION:The early Christian church emerged and dramatically spread even as Rome’s political dominion dramatically declined\, weakened by mass-casualty pandemics\, environmental calamities\, political instability\, and dehumanizing poverty. In this chaotic era\, observes Roman historian Dr. Kyle Harper (University of Oklahoma)\, the church grew and “boasted of being a ‘new ethnos\,’ a new nation” that adhered to Christian ethics and attracted people far and wide. What was it about the early church and its response to life-threatening challenges that drew people into its orbit? What does history suggest to us today\, as we contend with similar challenges? \nJoin Upper House for its third annual Geneva Forum at Upper House as it hosts Dr. Harper for an interdisciplinary lecture that interweaves the history of the Roman world\, religion\, disease\, and the environment.

SUMMARY:Every Medium Holy
DESCRIPTION:Known for his linocut print illustrations for the Every Moment Holy books\, (Rabbit Room Press’s contemporary liturgy project)\, Ned Bustard is a deep thinker about Christian vocation in the arts. He faithfully pursues his calling as he manages a gallery and publishing house\, cultivating a freelance graphic design business\, and creating his own art and illustrated books. During Upper House’s Friday luncheon\, Ned will share his art and discuss what it means to be a creative individual who follows a creative God—a question he and 21 other artists tackled in It Was Good: Making Art to the Glory of God\, a book he co-edited and published. \nIn sharing the story of his many pursuits\, Ned will help attendees think more deeply about the artist’s vocation. His views are grounded in a theology that esteems the greater body of Christ\, showing that the artist’s calling is one to be pursued in community. Connected with a rich web of people and organizations—including the Rabbit Room\, Laity Lodge\, The Glen\, and the Jubilee Conference—Ned regards interpersonal connections essential to his work. They enrich his methodologies\, portfolio\, and personal spirituality.

SUMMARY:Finding the Life We’re Looking For: From Mammon & Magic to Real Relationship
DESCRIPTION:Join Upper House and Andy Crouch for an interactive lunch based on his recent book\, The Life We’re Looking For: Reclaiming Relationship in a Technological World (Convergent\, 2022). In his book\, Crouch paints a vivid picture of how we’ve been deceived by a false vision of human flourishing. But he goes far beyond just diagnosing our crisis; he offers three distinct redemptive moves that can strengthen our individual and communal capacity for greater heart-soul-mind-strength love and service. Gleaning lessons from the Christian movement’s early social innovations to examples of more humanizing forms of technology\, Crouch explores how we can restore community and the relational trust and vulnerability it requires. \nWhatever your occupation\, vocation\, or level of organizational leadership\, Upper House invites you for an interactive lunch around tables as we engage in virtual conversation with Andy Crouch\, who will help us think anew about how we might strengthen our connections\, build resilient and flourishing communities\, and live in ways that authentically express our humanity in its rich potentiality.

SUMMARY:Scientists\, Atheism & Religion: Deflating a Narrative of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:The “conflict thesis” between faith and science is one of the most stubborn myths that contributes to declining levels of public trust in scientists. Many outsiders\, especially religious people\, assume that all scientists are anti-religious\, based on the rhetoric of a few highly publicized scientists. In fact\, even among those identified as atheist scientists\, a diversity of views and opinions on religion exist. It is this diversity\, argues sociologist Elaine Howard Ecklund\, that holds the key to building bridges of understanding and pathways of dialogue across real and perceived divides.   \nWhether you identify as religious or not\, Ecklund’s research on the Varieties of Atheism in Science (Oxford University Press 2021) provides helpful data and context to understanding a less well-known dimension to the intersection of faith and science. In this lecture\, she will present core findings from a survey of over 1\,200 atheist scientists in the US and the UK and 81 in-depth interviews. Together\, you will explore what everyday atheist scientists think about religion and the limits to what science can explain\, atheist scientists’ views on meaning and morality\, and the routes that led to atheism in science.

SUMMARY:Music\, Resilience & the People of North Korea
DESCRIPTION:What unexpected stories might millennials of North Korea have to tell us? What roles does music play for Koreans advancing peace in one of the world’s most authoritarian countries? \nEuimin Shin\, the artist-in-residence at Upper House\, returns to us from an extraordinary summer research trip to Berlin\, Germany\, where she met and interviewed Koreans and studied a visionary Korean-German composer. \nDuring this event\, Euimin will interweave the narratives of millennial change agents in North Korea with the story of Korean-German composer Isang Yun\, a man who sought peace and reunification of the Korean peninsula. She will share her reflections on the role of music and her role as a musician\, a Korean\, and a peacemaker\, capping off the evening with her own performance of Isang Yun’s solo violin work.  \nUpper House invites you to explore new territory: unfamiliar and powerful stories gleaned through fresh research\, documentary film\, and musical performance.

SUMMARY:Thinking Theologically About These Times: A Workshop for Pastors & Preachers
DESCRIPTION:What a time to be alive—and what a challenging time it is for leaders to shepherd people toward transformation. Many church leaders have had to learn how to operate a hybrid church model with some members in-person and others only participating online. The current experience of the church is far different than it was only two years ago.   \nIn such a time as this\, pastors\, preachers\, and leaders are looking for theological insight and answers: How can they effectively preach to their congregations and lead them courageously? What is it they “ought” to do?    \nDuring this workshop\, Rev. Dr. William Curtis will help pastors and preachers articulate the burdens and blessings of these revolutionary days. He will help attendees bring theology to the forefront\, posing the question\, “What is God doing now\, in the midst of all that’s going on?” Thinking theologically both grounds and inspires believers as they pursue God in every area of life. Dr. Curtis will provide theological grounding and methods for pastors\, preachers\, and leaders to be better able to navigate and even thrive during these tumultuous times.   \nThis half-day workshop is co-hosted with Mt. Zion Baptist Church\, with additional partnership from Collaboration Project.

SUMMARY:Life After College: Finding Meaning in Faith\, Work & Calling
DESCRIPTION:Do you find yourself questioning what you were created to do? Does God have one right job for you after college? Do you feel like college has fully prepared you for the challenges of the workforce? Do you have a certain sense of calling? \nOn average\, we spend 90\,000 hours of our lives at work. We want these hours to be meaningful\, and our gifts and education productively employed. Our desire is to be aligned with God’s good purposes for us. But…Is it really possible for these work-related wants to be fulfilled? Can we really make strong connections between meaning\, work\, and faith in today’s world? \nDuring this Upper House cohort series\, you will learn more about how to— \n\ndiscern God’s calling in a constantly changing world\nengage what the Bible actually says about work\ndevelop healthy habits and a realistic mindset for the world of work\nreflect productively on their work journey\n\nWe are created to be God’s image-bearers\, to pursue and live out God’s Kingdom purposes in all that we do. These sessions are set up to help you advance in your life and work journey\, knowing more about your purpose and assured that as a child of God you are always beloved\, growing\, and accompanied in all that you do. \nWho is this Cohort for?  \nThis cohort is for students who want to dig deeper into what God has for them\, their work\, and their faith. Each week we will learn about what the Bible has to say about work through the lens of the Gospel\, discuss practical skillsets to help us discern calling\, and engage in small group discussions. During our final week\, we will match each student with local vocational mentors (either one-on-one or in small groups) to have a galvanizing discussion about how to integrate Christian faith in the workplace.

SUMMARY:Let the Art Speak
DESCRIPTION:Bearing God’s image\, yet cloaked in humanity\, we labor to see the dignity of others and even ourselves. In a world awash in brokenness and turmoil\, art can powerfully speak. But how does this happen? \nMost works of art represent the convergence of artistic perception and skill\, as artists engage a variety of media and subjects. Meaning-makers by nature\, artists who focus on the human form and experience reveal the personhood of others and become storytellers in the process. When photographers capture the image of a face\, or painters study their subjects\, or filmmakers weave a narrative\, they draw near to an Other. In doing so\, they seek and even reveal meaning\, unveiling attributes\, emotions\, and human stories often undetected. \nTo launch this rich half-day conversation\, art historian Wayne Roosa will provide a critical framework to aid attendees in thinking more carefully about the human story and the place of our own stories within it. Following that\, photographer Asher Imtiaz\, filmmaker Alex Miranda Cruz\, and painter Catherine Prescott will share images of their compelling work and discuss the ideas\, convictions\, and questions that drive their creative endeavors. \nAmong the questions we will ask: How do these artists approach the holy task of presenting the personhood of their subjects? What stories are they telling? How can these makers—and others like them—help us to see more clearly? All together\, we will consider the ways in which art can be spiritually\, communally\, and culturally transformative. If we dare to “let the art speak\,” what might happen within and among us? \nSymposium Schedule\n9:00 AM      Welcome and Introduction\n9:10 AM       Presentation—Art Historian Wayne Roosa\n10:15 AM     Conversation—Filmmaker Alex Miranda and Photographer Asher Imtiaz\n11:15 AM      Presentation—Painter Catherine Prescott\n12:25 AM     Conversation with Presenters during Lunch (provided)\n1:00 PM       Closing

SUMMARY:Leading Through Crisis with Vision & Care
DESCRIPTION:How do you lead well through seemingly sequential crises—when the stakes are high\, the demands urgent\, and the issues and solutions complex and multilayered? \nBringing 35 years of crisis-honed experience to Upper House\, Steve Preston\, currently president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International\, is intimately familiar with such pressures. He served as the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in the wake of Hurricane Katrina\, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during the 2008 U.S. housing crisis\, and Chief Financial Officer of a Fortune 500 company during the Arthur Andersen accounting debacle. Through these and other crises\, Steve has had to negotiate strategies to achieve goals within an operational landscape experiencing intense pressure.   \nBoth Steve’s strategic acumen and long-held Christian faith inform his leadership. At this breakfast presentation\, he will reflect on how he has worked to help organizations navigate stress to advance their mission. Having served thousands of people and businesses in need of critical services\, his experience is invaluable for those considering what it means to be a leader during “such a time as this.”     \nThis event is in-person only (no livestream). The presentation will be recorded for public viewing after the event. Breakfast is provided. Optional donations accepted on site.
