SUMMARY:Is the Old Testament View on Justice & Punishment Compatible with Christianity?
DESCRIPTION:Is the Old Testament law a cruel master over Israel from which Jesus freed Christians? The legal reasoning of the Torah is some of the most misunderstood literature of the entire Bible. Jesus understood these books well and demonstrated keen legal insight whenever he interacted with the legal scholars and critics of his day. Moreover\, Jesus considered the OT law in line with the justice and mercy of the coming empire of God. Dru Johnson\, visiting professor of religion at Hope College\, will deliver this lecture.

SUMMARY:The Shaping Power of Media – a Live Podcast Discussion
DESCRIPTION:What better way to explore the influence and interplay of media\, technology\, and human communication than during a live podcast recording at Upper House? \nYou will be both audience member and participant in a discussion with John Dyer—author\, sociologist\, and theologian—who will take questions in a live format\, focusing on the influence of media on our society\, culture\, and individual lives. This live recording experience will illustrate what’s involved in the creation of “media ecology\,” a field pioneered by social scientist Marshall McLuhan. How media influence our perception\, cognition\, and behaviors is both subtle and profound. Together we will dig into the gist of the ways various media shape our world.

SUMMARY:Gone for Good? Negotiating the Coming Wave of Church Property Transition
DESCRIPTION:By 2030\, as many as 100\,000 church buildings and billions of dollars of church-owned property are expected to be sold or repurposed throughout the U.S. — representing the loss of gathering places and even social services in communities nationwide. According to Mark Elsdon\, author and editor of Gone for Good: Negotiating the Coming Wave of Church Property Transition (Eerdmans\, 2024)\, the transfer of church property is both a critical issue and opportunity for church and community leaders seeking to serve the common good. How do we face the issues and opportunities head-on and mission-minded? \nJoin Upper House for a book launch and conversation with Mark Elsdon\, Executive Director of Pres House and Co-Founder and Lead Builder of Rooted Good\, who will address the various ways that church properties have been creatively redeployed to serve the common good.

SUMMARY:The Promise & Peril of Artificial Intelligence & Sacred Texts
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Brent Seales has spent more than two decades restoring cultural and historical artifacts\, such as the 1\,700-year-old\, charred\, En-Gedi Scroll (above)\, which would disintegrate if touched. Dr. Seales developed a way to digitally reconstruct the fragile document through a “virtual unwrapping technique\,” revealing the book of Leviticus\, part of the oldest Hebrew Bible ever found after the Dead Sea scrolls. His breakthrough work received international recognition and was featured in Science Advances\, the New York Times\, Le Monde\, the Times of London\, and on NOVA. He is now working with his team on the carbonized Herculaneum scrolls\, among the most iconic — and inaccessible — of the world’s damaged manuscripts. These scrolls look like lumps of coal and were found in a grand villa thought to be owned by the father-in-law of Julius Caesar. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 buried Herculaneum and all its treasures in gas and volcanic mud. The emerging work on these scrolls is the subject of this Nature article\, as well as this New York Times story. \nUpper House is delighted to welcome Dr. Seales back to UW-Madison to learn how he is applying methods inspired by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to rescue and reveal long-hidden\, ancient texts. He will address the current state-of-the-art in making lost texts unlost\, the renaissance unfolding in the fields of papyrology and the classics\, as well as implications for biblical manuscript studies. He will also discuss the potential pitfalls of AI-based methods\, which have the power to interpolate\, postulate\, and even invent very plausible results that are completely false. Join us for an evening with Dr. Brent Seales\, as we consider the exciting possibilities AI methods offer for rescuing and redeeming hidden ancient texts\, as well as the tensions and risks such methods present.

SUMMARY:What's Unique About American Christianity?
DESCRIPTION:American society and culture have deeply shaped traditions of Christianity that have developed here since the 16th century. To make sense of American Christianity today\, we’ll unpack three\, profound\, historical and sociological influences: the trans-Atlantic origins of American Christianity; the legal disestablishment of religion and subsequent “marketplace” of religion; and ways Americans have boosted the development and growth of the global church in the 20th century. The history propelling these influences\, as well as the tensions embedded within them\, have made American Christianity distinct. Join Upper House’s Dan Hummel to explore this topic.

SUMMARY:Why is the Old Testament So Difficult to Understand?
DESCRIPTION:Many of the Old Testament’s texts strike us as downright offensive today—how do we understand such a difficult text? And for those communities who hold it as sacred\, how do we read it as the word of God? Upper House welcomes Aubrey Buster of Wheaton College for this lecture.

SUMMARY:From Good to Great: Tailored Practices for Social Sector Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Non-profit leaders are on the front lines of enhancing the quality of life for all members of society. Whether leading a church\, human welfare\, or civic organization\, social sector leaders have unique opportunities to contribute to human flourishing. But their challenges are unique\, and the models presented to them from other cultural spheres are often unsuitable\, even damaging\, for non-profit leadership. \nJim Collins\, distinguished author and leadership researcher\, opens his 2005 monograph\, Good to Great and the Social Sectors\, with the following assertion: \nWe must reject the idea—well-intentioned\, but dead wrong—that the primary path to greatness in the social sectors is to be more like a business. Most businesses—like most of anything else in life—fall somewhere between mediocre and good. Few are great. When you compare great companies with good ones\, many widely practiced business norms turn out to correlate with mediocrity\, not greatness. So\, then\, why would we want to import the practices of mediocrity into the social sectors? \nIf typical business practice isn’t the right model\, then what is? Collins argues and has demonstrated through his research that distinct disciplines lead to greatness—practices that can be applied within all institutional realms\, including the social sector. \nIf you lead\, work for\, or serve on a board of a non-profit organization\, including a church\, then this cohort is for you. Collins’ monograph will serve as a basis for our exploration\, but we’ll also draw on other key readings\, empirical research\, and biblical/theological insights.

SUMMARY:Pressing Issues for the Global Church
DESCRIPTION:The Christian church is a multinational\, multicultural\, multilingual body that spans every society on the globe. In the twenty-first century\, the vast majority of Christians live in the “Global South”—Asia\, Africa\, and Latin America. Yet in many conversations about “the Church\,” Americans tend to focus on themselves. In this summer series\, Upper House will host five talks to explore some of the dominant social issues in the global church—issues that affect all Christians\, albeit in different ways depending on location.

SUMMARY:The Rise & Fall of Dispensationalism: Book Launch with Dan Hummel
DESCRIPTION:As a theological perspective\, dispensationalism has had a profound impact on American evangelicalism—from advancing views on biblical literalism and end-times prophecies\, to the formation and defense of the current state of Israel. Even beyond its religious impacts\, dispensationalism has influenced culture and politics. Join Upper House as we unpack its origins and consider its broad cultural reverberations at our gathering with historian Dan Hummel\, whose new book— The Rise and Fall of Dispensationalism: How the Evangelical Battle over the End Times Shaped a Nation (Eerdmans\, 2023)—lands in bookstores this May.

SUMMARY:Public Dialogue in an Era of Polarization
DESCRIPTION:In an era of polarization and upheaval\, knowing when to “speak” (organize\, protest\, argue\, and actually talk) and when to “listen” (observe\, rethink\, seek out new information\, and take note) can be unclear\, even as our choices to engage can be quite consequential. SUMMARY:READ WISCONSIN — Enslaved\, Indentured\, Free: Five Black Women on the Upper Mississippi\, 1800-1850\, by Mary Elise Antoine
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Wisconsin Historical Society\, Upper House is excited to feature Mary Elise Antoine’s 2022 book\, Enslaved\, Indentured\, Free: Five Black Women on the Upper Mississippi\, 1800-1850 (Wisconsin Historical Society Press) in this first Read Wisconsin book event of 2023. The author will be attending the first part of our gathering (virtually) to discuss the book and her extensive research. \nAntoine’s book tells the story of five extraordinary Black women whose lives intersected in Prairie du Chien\, Wisconsin in the 1800s. Gleaning details from legal documents\, military records\, court transcripts\, and personal correspondence\, Antoine unveils the lived experience of enslaved Black people in the Upper Mississippi River Valley—people who were denied freedom despite the fact that the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 made slavery illegal in territory that encompassed Illinois\, Indiana\, Michigan\, Ohio\, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota. Difficult to enforce and riddled with loopholes\, the ordinance was thwarted by white enslavers who continued to hold Black people captive well into the 19th Century. The five women Antoine spotlights all secured their freedom through perseverance\, self-purchase\, or freedom suits.

SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Plagues & Political Conflict: The Era of the Early Christian Church
DESCRIPTION:The early Christian church emerged and dramatically spread even as Rome’s political dominion dramatically declined\, weakened by mass-casualty pandemics\, environmental calamities\, political instability\, and dehumanizing poverty. In this chaotic era\, observes Roman historian Dr. Kyle Harper (University of Oklahoma)\, the church grew and “boasted of being a ‘new ethnos\,’ a new nation” that adhered to Christian ethics and attracted people far and wide. What was it about the early church and its response to life-threatening challenges that drew people into its orbit? What does history suggest to us today\, as we contend with similar challenges? \nJoin Upper House for its third annual Geneva Forum at Upper House as it hosts Dr. Harper for an interdisciplinary lecture that interweaves the history of the Roman world\, religion\, disease\, and the environment.
