SUMMARY:Being God's Image
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be human? This timeless question proves critical as we seek to understand our purpose\, identity\, and significance. The Bible reveals important truths related to our human identity and vocation that are critical to the flourishing of all of creation. Carmen Joy Imes\, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Biola University\, seeks to recover the theologically rich message of the creation narratives starting in the book of Genesis as they illuminate what it means to be human.

SUMMARY:From Dysfunction to Wellness: How Faith Helps Heal Families in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:As a judge seeing a tremendous flow of brokenness and despair in an urban public family court system\, Judge Ryan Larson wanted to find an alternative to the prison pipeline and never-ending child protective services interventions. He pioneered an innovative community-based program that brought together judicial and political entities across the ideological spectrum along with local churches\, community groups\, and other faith-based organizations. At this Chesterton House event\, Judge Larson will talk about his own journey developing this program and its ongoing challenges in seeking justice and helping families to flourish amidst crippling disadvantage.

SUMMARY:Capitalism & Love of Neighbor: Can They be Reconciled?
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House welcomes Sarah Estelle Associate Professor of Economics; Hope College to discuss the topic of capitalism. Typically Christians who focus on the morality of markets and economics see the problem as “taming” markets to mitigate the unjust outcomes they tend to produce. Classically libertarian views are not usually looked upon favorably by Christian theologians who engage in economic questions\, being too fixated on individualism at the expense of the common good. Sarah Estelle has taken a different view\, defending the libertarian political economy inspired by F. A. Hayek and classical Christian thinkers such as Augustine and Aquinas. On her view\, markets can actually serve as an instrument of love\, and finds a surprising compatibility with Augustinian concerns of the classical Christian tradition. Join Chesterton House in conversation with Sarah to hear about her own journey in finding an unlikely synthesis between these approaches.

SUMMARY:When the Bible Disagrees with Itself with Henry Sun\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Many Christians have been told that the Bible contains a unified message without any disagreements\, conflicts\, or contradictions within its pages. But what if the premise of that claim is false? This webinar will begin by considering different examples of instances where the Bible disagrees with itself and conclude with an audience discussion of how we can maintain faith in God and God’s revelation in that context.

SUMMARY:Markets\, Morality & the Medieval Christian Mind
DESCRIPTION:Mary Hirschfeld\, professor of economics and theology at Villanova University\, became an accomplished professor in a tenured post at Occidental College. As a faculty member there\, she had an adult conversion to the Christian faith\, which then prompted her to reflect on the foundations of the modern economic discipline as a moral enterprise. \nHirschfeld’s questions on how to approach economics from a Christian perspective led her to leave a prized tenured post and begin a second doctorate in theology from Notre Dame. Now a professor of theology at Villanova\, she is one of the few very few scholars in the world who have a bi-cultural literacy through two very different lenses on the world. Join Chesterton house to gain perspective and insight on navigating what it means to live a virtuously economic life. \n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom

SUMMARY:Character\, Virtue & Leadership
DESCRIPTION:The Trinity Forum invites you to join us on Friday\, February 17th at 1:30 p.m. ET for an Online Conversation with Michael to better understand how character is formed\, why it matters\, and how it can contribute to personal\, communal\, and civic flourishing. \nThe increasing conflict\, chaos\, and moral confusion of our time has made leadership more challenging\, and the role of character increasingly questioned. What does it mean to lead wisely and well? Is successful leadership defined by “winning”? How is trust built in a cynical age? \nWake Forest professor\, author\, and director of the The Program for Leadership and Character\, Michael Lamb wrestles with such questions by exploring the link between virtue and wise leadership\, and showing how character formation enables leaders to establish trust\, think wisely\, empower others\, and persevere through difficult times. \n

SUMMARY:Poetry & Truth Telling with Marilyn McEntyre
DESCRIPTION:Join New College Berkeley to reflect on what poetry has to do with maintaining a commitment to truth telling and how the practice of poetry—reading it and writing it—can attune us to language in important and invigorating ways. There will be time to try out some exercises in making poetry and in “creative reading” in this interactive meeting.

SUMMARY:Tasting God: Poetry of the Incarnation
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean for God to be described as a grain of wheat\, thrashed to pieces and baked into bread? Or a living book\, with our names written in the heart of the body? Central to Christian faith is the idea that God became human in the incarnation. Join Chesterton House to explore poetry that helps us experience the beauty and strangeness of this central belief. Likely authors include John Donne\, George Herbert\, Langston Hughes\, and Luci Shaw.

SUMMARY:The Politics of Forgiveness
DESCRIPTION:Forgiveness is a Christian virtue. Is it also a political one? To what extent does forgiveness depend on repentance\, and upon justice? Should we resign ourselves to mere toleration\, or can forgiveness be approximated in concrete political ways? Join Baylor in Washington to discuss these questions. Featured speakers include Elizabeth Bruenig\, Bishop Claude Alexander and Fleming Rutledge.

SUMMARY:The Words We Live By
DESCRIPTION:Join New College Berkeley and Marilyn McEntyre to discuss the importance of the language we use with ourselves and others to articulate faith\, spirituality\, values\, and moral commitments. You’ll also discuss “loaded language\,” “trigger words\,” and what lively conversation\, both within circles of trust and across lines of division\, might look like. Time will be reserved for conversation about the conversation!

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Jr. & Russell Kirk: A Consensus of First Principles
DESCRIPTION:In their own time\, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Russell Kirk occupied different ends of the political spectrum. Their philosophies inspired the two most powerful movements of the age: the Nonviolent Movement (which led the larger Civil Rights Movement) and the modern Conservative Movement. Without King and Kirk modern American Social Justice liberalism and modern American conservatism as we know them would not exist. And yet\, for all of their differences\, our modern politics suffer because contemporary liberalism and conservatism lack the grounding in virtues\, communitarian values and faith in an ordered universe that both Kingian Nonviolence and Kirkian Conservatism held fast to. Is it possible that by reacquainting ourselves with these lost traditions we could summon the better angels of left and right and restore a politics of virtue for the modern age? \nActon Institute welcomes John Wood Jr. for this evening conversation.

SUMMARY:Learning Humility with Richard Foster & Brenda Quinn
DESCRIPTION:Not only is humility vanishing from contemporary culture\, but we are also witnessing how destructive a lack of humility has become among our churches and ministry leaders. And yet\, Richard Foster\, the founder of Renovaré\, insists that humility is central to the journey toward character formation and spiritual transformation. \nJoin InterVarsity to discuss a vanishing virtue of academia\, humility. Richard Foster spent a year “learning humility” and out of this\, wrote Learning Humility\, which is in a journal format\, following his own reading\, reflection\, and learning.\n\nJoining Foster is Brenda Quinn\, a pastor of Spiritual Formation at Living Way Fellowship in Colorado. Brenda read and discussed the drafts of each chapter\, becoming a partner with Richard in the writing of this book.
