SUMMARY:Speaking Peace in a Climate of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:This workshop (the first of a six-part series)\, hosted by New College Berkeley\, will be an opportunity to reinvigorate our own language habits and to equip each other with words that will help us navigate the confusions and challenges of this historical moment. \n“Our times are in God’s hands.” And also in ours—the rich\, wild internet\, the water crisis\, widespread warfare\, climate change\, a polarized economy—these are the conditions in which we are to work out our salvation together. We need to learn new ways to speak peace. We need to find words that comfort and sustain courage in the face of large and looming threats. \nWe’ll consider how to sustain life-giving conversations as more and more words turn into “triggers\,” as lies go unchallenged and honesty goes unrewarded—or is punished. We’ll identify a number of strategies for maintaining clarity\, integrity\, and authenticity in word work\, drawing examples from contemporary writers and speakers from whom we can learn. \nWe’ll be addressing two topics each week\, drawn from Speaking Peace in a Climate of Conflict. Sessions will include brief writing exercises\, so come equipped with laptop or pen and paper.

SUMMARY:An Altar Call: Renewal & the American Church
DESCRIPTION:Amid the growing polarization\, covered-up abuses\, schisms\, and scandals roiling evangelicalism\, studies show that many American Christians – and even many pastors – are increasingly disillusioned with and exhausted by what they experience at church. Wisdom is required to confront the challenge: how can we refocus on the Good News and its transforming power\, and together be amazed by grace once again? \nTrinity Forum Senior Fellow Russell Moore\, current Christianity Today Editor in Chief\, former President of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention\, and author of the new book\, Losing Our Religion\, will join The Trinity Forum on Friday\, July 21 to discuss the possibilities for repentance and renewal in the American church.

SUMMARY:Being God's Image
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be human? This timeless question proves critical as we seek to understand our purpose\, identity\, and significance. The Bible reveals important truths related to our human identity and vocation that are critical to the flourishing of all of creation. Carmen Joy Imes\, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Biola University\, seeks to recover the theologically rich message of the creation narratives starting in the book of Genesis as they illuminate what it means to be human.

SUMMARY:From Dysfunction to Wellness: How Faith Helps Heal Families in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:As a judge seeing a tremendous flow of brokenness and despair in an urban public family court system\, Judge Ryan Larson wanted to find an alternative to the prison pipeline and never-ending child protective services interventions. He pioneered an innovative community-based program that brought together judicial and political entities across the ideological spectrum along with local churches\, community groups\, and other faith-based organizations. At this Chesterton House event\, Judge Larson will talk about his own journey developing this program and its ongoing challenges in seeking justice and helping families to flourish amidst crippling disadvantage.

SUMMARY:Capitalism & Love of Neighbor: Can They be Reconciled?
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House welcomes Sarah Estelle Associate Professor of Economics; Hope College to discuss the topic of capitalism. Typically Christians who focus on the morality of markets and economics see the problem as “taming” markets to mitigate the unjust outcomes they tend to produce. Classically libertarian views are not usually looked upon favorably by Christian theologians who engage in economic questions\, being too fixated on individualism at the expense of the common good. Sarah Estelle has taken a different view\, defending the libertarian political economy inspired by F. A. Hayek and classical Christian thinkers such as Augustine and Aquinas. On her view\, markets can actually serve as an instrument of love\, and finds a surprising compatibility with Augustinian concerns of the classical Christian tradition. Join Chesterton House in conversation with Sarah to hear about her own journey in finding an unlikely synthesis between these approaches.

SUMMARY:When the Bible Disagrees with Itself with Henry Sun\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Many Christians have been told that the Bible contains a unified message without any disagreements\, conflicts\, or contradictions within its pages. But what if the premise of that claim is false? This webinar will begin by considering different examples of instances where the Bible disagrees with itself and conclude with an audience discussion of how we can maintain faith in God and God’s revelation in that context.
