SUMMARY:ESN Conversation: Following Jesus in a Warming World with Kyle Meyaard-Schaap
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever looked at the effects of climate change and the apathy of so many around you and wondered\, “What are we missing here?” Climate activist Kyle Meyaard-Schaap understands this feeling from personal experience. But in his years of speaking to and equipping Christians to work for climate action\, he’s seen the trend begin to shift. More and more young Christians are waking up to the realities of climate change. They want to help\, but they’re not sure how. \nKyle Meyaard-Schaap is vice president of the Evangelical Environmental Network.

SUMMARY:Feminism & the Family
DESCRIPTION:What if the key to achieving female equality lies in embracing what makes women different from men instead of competing to be the same? Notre Dame Professor Abigail Favale was among the strongest feminist scholars in America\, when a religious transformation moved her to reassess the viewpoints she found herself defending. This reassessment led her to the conclusion that feminist theory has lost its way by trying to constantly conform to shifting trends in popular culture. The dominant culture today imposes the idea that women’s bodies are merely abstract objects of performance\, not necessarily related to “family.” From a young age\, girls are taught to strive to “keep up with the boys\,” as this is what is needed to create an “identity” for themselves—one that asks the question “What can females do\, build\, compete for\, and achieve?” without acknowledging or honoring the divine gift bestowed on them in creation. \nCoinciding with a rapid increase in girls preferring to be boys\, and the shocking rise of depression\, anxiety\, and self-harm among teens\, our culture has deviated from the creational uniqueness of women. While holding true to feminism’s vision of female equality and dignity\, Favale’s “Catholic Feminism” seeks to restore a theology of human identity grounded in family\, harmony\, wholeness\, and divine gift.

SUMMARY:How To Become a Good Person: Dante\, Purgatorio & the Transformation of the Human
DESCRIPTION:How do we take ethically malformed\, broken humans like us and mold them into the sort of moral exemplars we wish we could be? Various secular views have their own answers (including the contemporary academy)\, but the classical Christian tradition has a much richer moral vision for humans that understands moral formation to be far more than “ethics education” or inculcating “values.” It’s one thing to acknowledge that we are proud\, lustful\, and lazy; it’s quite another to be transformed into virtuous followers of Jesus. In this mini-course we’ll look at one of the greatest poets of the West\, Dante Alighiere\, to see how the Thomistic vision he exemplifies tackles the transformation of sinful humans into glorified divine image-bearers. \nIn his great allegorical epic poem\, The Divine Comedy\, the second part\, Purgatorio\, deals with the renunciation of sin. Magnificent poetry subtly presents sophisticated philosophical theology and anthropology\, enfleshing it in gripping stories and memorable images. In this short course\, will look at how Dante understands the process of sanctification through his unforgettable vignettes about pride\, wrath\, and sloth. We will learn something about each of these sins from the poem\, and look at the way in which Dante uses narrative and poetic devices to illuminate deep truths about human life. \nCome join Chesterton House as we listen to preeminent Christian philosopher Eleonore Stump take us on a tour of Dante’s literary masterpiece\, the Purgatorio.

SUMMARY:A New Year with the Word
DESCRIPTION:For the Trinity Forum’s 100th Online Conversation\, the Trinity Forum is delighted to welcome back poet\, Anglican priest\, and scholar\, Malcolm Guite. Malcolm is the author of Waiting on the Word: A Poem a Day for Advent\, Christmas\, and Epiphany. \nWith Malcolm\, we’ll start the new year with an exploration of the word — the Word made flesh\, and the words we use each day. Why are words so central for God’s design for our world? Can the creative acts of speaking and writing provide a window into what it means to be created in the image of God? And in these times\, in which words often seem to be devalued\, is there a place for the slow\, deep language of poetry? \nThe Trinity Forum invites you to join an Online Conversation with Malcolm Guite\, Friday\, January 5 at 1:30 p.m. ET\, on the eve of Epiphany\, to begin our new year of conversation together.

SUMMARY:What is a Christian Study Center?
DESCRIPTION:What is a Christian study center? And why is it called a movement? This session is designed specifically for those who either may not be familiar with Christian study centers\, or who may only be familiar with a single center and are curious to learn more about the national movement. How do Christian study centers fit into the landscape of campus ministries? What are the latest developments in the movement\, and in what ways are Christian study centers a new model of Christian Higher Education? \nIn this one-hour virtual meeting on December 13th at 8 pm ET\, CCSC Executive Director Karl Johnson will address these questions and offer insight into where the movement may be headed. Open to all—please share this meeting with anyone you know who may be interested. Register via the website link below.

SUMMARY:Joy to the World: Caroling Christmas & Christian Formation
DESCRIPTION:As we move through Advent and prepare to celebrate Christ’s incarnation\, Christmas carols are an integral part of the experience for many of us. In this season–and at all times–how can understand and fully experience the formative power of music? And amid distraction and anxiety\, how can we keep Christ at the center of our hearts as we sing? \nKeith Getty\, extraordinary hymn writer\, musician\, and catalyst for a modern hymn movement\, will join Trinity Forum for a special Trinity Forum Online Conversation on December 8 to help us consider these questions.

SUMMARY:How to Know a Person: An Online Conversation with David Brooks
DESCRIPTION:In a society where so many feel unseen and unknown\, how do we become the kind of people who deeply see and know those around us? The conflict and division in our society demonstrate the need for people committed to pursuing human connection\, even across lines of difference. What can we do – as individuals and in community – that will help us really understand the people in our lives? \nDrawing upon the research in his latest book\, How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen\, New York Times columnist David Brooks will help us become more hopeful about our ability to create essential connections. SUMMARY:Speaking Peace in a Climate of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:This workshop (the first of a six-part series)\, hosted by New College Berkeley\, will be an opportunity to reinvigorate our own language habits and to equip each other with words that will help us navigate the confusions and challenges of this historical moment. \n“Our times are in God’s hands.” And also in ours—the rich\, wild internet\, the water crisis\, widespread warfare\, climate change\, a polarized economy—these are the conditions in which we are to work out our salvation together. We need to learn new ways to speak peace. We need to find words that comfort and sustain courage in the face of large and looming threats. \nWe’ll consider how to sustain life-giving conversations as more and more words turn into “triggers\,” as lies go unchallenged and honesty goes unrewarded—or is punished. We’ll identify a number of strategies for maintaining clarity\, integrity\, and authenticity in word work\, drawing examples from contemporary writers and speakers from whom we can learn. \nWe’ll be addressing two topics each week\, drawn from Speaking Peace in a Climate of Conflict. Sessions will include brief writing exercises\, so come equipped with laptop or pen and paper.

SUMMARY:An Altar Call: Renewal & the American Church
DESCRIPTION:Amid the growing polarization\, covered-up abuses\, schisms\, and scandals roiling evangelicalism\, studies show that many American Christians – and even many pastors – are increasingly disillusioned with and exhausted by what they experience at church. Wisdom is required to confront the challenge: how can we refocus on the Good News and its transforming power\, and together be amazed by grace once again? \nTrinity Forum Senior Fellow Russell Moore\, current Christianity Today Editor in Chief\, former President of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention\, and author of the new book\, Losing Our Religion\, will join The Trinity Forum on Friday\, July 21 to discuss the possibilities for repentance and renewal in the American church.
