SUMMARY:A Conversation with Stanley Hauerwas
DESCRIPTION:Join Chesterton House and Stanley Hauerwas for a conversation. Professor Hauerwas will be Zooming in to a live gathered audience at The Knoll (Chesterton House). At the conclusion of the event\, in person attendees will partake in post conversation lead by Executive Director Vivek Mathew. \nProfessor Hauerwas has sought to recover the significance of the virtues for understanding the nature of the Christian life. This search has led him to emphasize the importance of the church\, as well as narrative for understanding Christian existence. His work cuts across disciplinary lines as he is in conversation with systematic theology\, philosophical theology and ethics\, political theory\, as well as the philosophy of social science and medical ethics. He was named “America’s Best Theologian” by Time magazine in 2001. Dr. Hauerwas\, who holds a joint appointment in Duke Law School\, delivered the prestigious Gifford Lectureship at the University of St. Andrews\, Scotland in 2001. \nHauerwas’ book\, A Community of Character: Toward a Constructive Christian Social Ethic\, was selected as one of the 100 most important books on religion of the 20th century. Dr. Hauerwas recently authored The Work of Theology (Eerdmans\, 2015)\, Hannah’s Child: A Theological Memoir\, 2nd Ed. (Eerdmans\, 2012)\, and War and the American Difference: Theological Reflections on Violence and National Identity ( Baker Academic Press\, 2011).

SUMMARY:Freud & the Rise of the Sexualized Self: A Conversation with Carl Trueman
DESCRIPTION:In his recent book\, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self\, historical theologian Carl Trueman takes the reader on a detailed tour through intellectual history\, arguing that the emergence of today’s cultural flashpoints on sexuality and gender really emerge from changing ideas of the self\,. Sigmund Freud is a pivotal hinge point in this cultural transformation\, moving from a vision of sexuality as needing a proper ordering on both religious and philosophical grounds\, to a more expressive and individualist approach to sexuality that is often assumed today. \n\n\nWith this Freudian pivot\, longstanding Christian views of sexuality and the self come under suspicion\, as they prevent humans from fully expressing themselves. How should Christians respond? Join the Chesterton House in conversation with Carl Trueman as we explore how rival concepts of human selfhood play out in our culture wars.

SUMMARY:God\, Sex & the Training of Desire
DESCRIPTION:For Christians venturing into topics of sexuality and gender\, one of the strangest and yet most crucial historic claims of the church is that sexual desire is intricately bound up with our longing for God. This linking of sexual desire and desire for God is not at all obvious\, and yet plays a central role in many historic Christian traditions as they grapple with the right ordering of sexuality within a divinely created\, God-filled cosmos. \n\n\nSarah Coakley is a preeminent theologian and Anglican priest whose work over several decades has explored these connections. Her wide-ranging discussion of everything from mystical and contemplative prayer to feminist and queer theologies have earned her a wide audience of scholars and laypeople alike who have found her work an unexpected alternative to stalemated culture wars. Join us in conversation as we explore her own complex work together. \n\nProfessor Coakley will be present via zoom.
